My Story

My Story

Shawnime Profile Pic.jpg

By day I work management at a medical device company in North East Ohio, but in my free time I'm an Author, Animator and Comic Book Artist. I published my first Novel, The Empyrean War Hyperspeed Squadron back in 2011. I completed my first ever animated film, a 30 minute Computer Animated short film called Cybertech Episode 1 July 2015, and I publish my first Graphic Novel Cybertech Episode 1 August 2015. I am currently working on the sequel to the first Graphic Novel with plans to release 6 more episodes to the Cybertech Series and as I upgrade my equipment, I intend on animating the rest of the Cybertech Series as well.

Background

I was born in Cleveland Ohio, one of 3 children of which one is my identical twin brother.  I grew up in Warrensville Heights, a suburb of Cleveland and attended the Warrensville City school district. I graduated from Warrensville Heights High 1997 “Go Tigers” as part of the National Honor Society and I graduated the Warrensville Branch of ITT Technical Institute with an Associate of Applied Science Degree in Computer Electronics Engineer Technology 2011. I also made the National Technical Honor Society.

Art & Animation Background

I was self taught. My introduction to animation came when I was in kindergarten. An art teacher had came to my class and showed us a flip book of a foot ball going through a goal post.  I was so fascinated by that, I went home that night and to my father’s chagrin, attempted to duplicate that animation by tearing the blank pages out of his old books. I had successfully recreated that animation and from that point on I was animating. My favorite flip book animations were of helicopters blowing up bases or other helicopters. I was fan of Airwolf at the time.

My introduction to Art came when I was in the first grade. Voltron was a popular cartoon at the time. A kid that was a few class ahead of me had drew a picture of the black lion that looked just like the black lion from Voltron.  That is when I became inspired to try and draw.  I would spend the next few years copying pictures trying to get my pictures to look like the original.  The first drawing of mines that looked like what it should came when I was in the second grade. It was of a tiger.  That was the first time I realize that I could actually draw.  After that, I started drawing comic book and I continued to do my flip book animations.

Another skill of mine was model building. I use to draw up 3 dimensional designs and make them out of card board. I made jets, Helicopters (especially Airwolf),cars, Transformers (another popular cartoon at the time) and even animals.  I had gotten so good at these models that classmates started buying them from me including one of my teachers. My crowning achievement was of a F-14 tomcat that looked just like the actual jet.

In 1998, I spent a weekend at the Art Institute of Pittsburg and had the chance to work with the equipment animators used at the time.  Sadly I could not get the finances to attend that school but the fire was lit. I continue to work on my craft independently. 2002 I bought my first computer then proceeded to buy all the equipment I needed to start animating in my own home. Over the next 10 years I would create short animations as a hobby eventually developing my own style. My best animation was an Animated short called Flag Wars I created between 2008 and 2010.  It was the first animation of mine that had Voice overs of which I did myself and sound effects. It had won over my toughest critics, my family. Until this point, my family didn’t really show a lot of interest in my art.  My father didn’t think I was serious enough. Flag Wars was the first time they all recognized my talent and all the hard work I put in to become good at animating. They are all proud of me now.  This was also the first time I started to think of my art as more than just a hobby.

In 2016 From here on out will forever be known as the greatest year of my life. In that year, my first Film, Cybertech Episode 1, won Best Animation At the Los Angeles Independent Film Festival Awards, Won an Award of Recognition for animation at the IndieFEST, the Award of Recognition forAnimation and Webisode at the Best Shorts Competition, Won the Award of Recognition for Animation at the Hollywood International Moving Pictures Film Festival and Received a nomination for best animation and best sound at the Top Indie Film Awards. I had the privilege of attending two Red Carpet Events and have people interview me about my film. It was a lot of fun, I met some awesome people and made I hope some lasting relationships. I look forward to releasing my next film projects at LAIFFA and HIMPFF in the coming years.

Moving forward I'm excited about continuing the Cybertech Series. I've already completed the second Episode as a 3 part comic book series and I have the script for episode 3 written. I'll be looking to start that comic book series in the coming months. My clothing line also has been getting me a lot of attention while I'm out in public. People really seem to like the look of my characters and it has been generating a lot interest in the Cybertech series so much so that I am considering transitioning to doing my art full time. I still have some work to do before that becomes a reality but I look forward to that day. This has gone beyond my wildest dreams.

What is next for Shawnime? Comic Con. Starting June 8th I will be selling my movie and Comic Books along with other Shawnime Art at Comic Cons in the state of Ohio. My first will be Wizard World in Columbus and then My Home town of Cleveland next year but I'm also considering others.  Plus I'll be moving forward with animating my second film Cybertech Episode 2 in 2019.
